Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections

For years, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), derived from a patient’s own blood, has seen numerous applications in various medical fields because of its impressive wound-healing properties. More recently, research scientists have discovered that PRP can also effectively activate dermal fibroblasts and remodel skin’s extracellular matrix, which are necessary for stimulating collagen production and rejuvenating aged or damaged skin. Mississauga-based physician Dr. Deborah Seib administers via injection platelet-rich plasma as either a standalone therapy for cosmetic rejuvenation, or a complementary treatment for Fractora™ Laser Skin Rejuvenation. Following PRP treatments, her patients often achieve marked improvement in the tone, texture, and overall appearance of their skin.

Although the treatment might sound complex, it is a relatively simple office procedure that requires only about 45 minutes. However, because working safely with blood products requires knowledge, experience, and training, it makes sense to seek platelet-rich plasma cosmetic treatments from a trusted healthcare professional. Dr. Seib is a licensed physician who has undergone extensive training to administer platelet-rich plasma so that she can achieve the safest, most satisfactory outcomes possible.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a completely natural substance derived from a patient’s own blood. Blood naturally contains red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma, which is a clear fluid. These components can be extracted through the use of a centrifuge, or spinning machine, specifically designed for this application. After the red and white blood cells have been removed, the clear plasma remains, containing a higher percentage of platelets than normal—hence the name platelet-rich plasma.

For years, platelet-rich plasma has been successfully administered to help repair soft-tissue injuries. Now, Dr. Seib’s patients can take advantage of this advanced technology for cosmetic facial rejuvenation, achieving firmer, smoother, more youthful-looking skin.

After a PRP injection by Dr. Deborah Seib, growth factors in patient’s blood gradually begin to increase, promoting collagen production and accelerating tissue regeneration. Her patients typically experience one or more of the following PRP benefits:

  • Improved skin texture and tone
  • Smoothed lines and wrinkles
  • Enhanced firmness
  • Improved appearance of scars and acne lesions
  • Stimulated hair growth in patients experiencing alopecia, or hair loss

Following treatment, PRP benefits begin to appear within one month, and the skin’s texture and appearance continue to improve for approximately three months. For optimal aesthetic results, Dr. Seib recommends repeating PRP treatments three times at four-week intervals.

Since the substance used in the injections is autologous, or derived from a patient’s own blood, PRP is an ideal treatment alternative for those who prefer to avoid synthetic or animal-derived dermal fillers.

At a glance, here’s what patients can expect during a PRP cosmetic procedure:

  1. Dr. Seib will draw a small blood sample—a quantity similar to the amount drawn for a routine blood test.
  2. Using cutting-edge technology from RegenLab™, Dr. Seib will spin the blood sample in a centrifuge for five minutes to separate its components: red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma, and platelets.
  3. Dr. Seib will then re-inject the concentrated platelet-rich plasma into targeted areas for anti-aging benefits. She uses a U225 Meso Injector, one of the most advanced injectors on the market, which allows for rapid, precise injections, while reducing discomfort and bruising. As well, a microcannula can be used to inject facial wrinkles.
