BOTOX
BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatments
Dr. Deborah Seib administers BOTOX® Cosmetic for Toronto, Mississauga, and Oakville patients who prefer a safe, nonsurgical approach to facial rejuvenation from an experienced physician. BOTOX® Cosmetic, available by prescription only, is an injectable medication created from a highly purified form of Clostridium botulinum. When administered in minute amounts to target muscles, this botulinum toxin functions as a neuromuscular paralytic agent, weakening specific dynamic facial muscles and thereby minimizing the appearance of wrinkles caused when those muscles contract. BOTOX® prescription wrinkle injections produce safe and effective results, creating a smoother facial appearance that lasts approximately three months in most patients.
Although BOTOX® Cosmetic is widely available in Toronto, Mississauga, and Oakville, it should be administered only by an experienced, qualified physician who can help patients identify specific areas that would benefit from treatment, determine the appropriate dose and frequency for the desired outcome, and recognize any possible contraindications. In the wrong hands, BOTOX® has a greater potential for adverse side effects, but in the right hands, it can deliver outstanding aesthetic results.

In order to appreciate the valuable role BOTOX® can play in nonsurgical facial rejuvenation, it is important to understand facial anatomy, particularly the underlying muscles. Dynamic facial muscles, also called mimetic muscles, control our facial movements and enable us to form expressions that help us communicate nonverbally. Raising our frontalis muscle, for instance, enables us to lift our eyebrows to communicate curiosity, surprise, or disbelief. Contracting the glabellar muscles allows us to frown with disappointment, concentration, or anger. In essence, when dynamic muscles contract, the skin attached to these muscles moves, and repeated contractions of dynamic muscles over time can lead to a breakdown of collagen and elastin, which support the skin. As a result, creases and deep lines form. Fortunately, these dynamic wrinkles respond well to precisely injected neuromodulators such as BOTOX, which temporarily render muscles inactive.
In contrast, fine lines and wrinkles that form on the epidermis, or outer layer of skin, appear because of numerous other factors: environmental exposure, sun damage, smoking, loss of facial volume due to weight loss or aging, and genetics, among others. Because muscle activity does not cause static wrinkles, BOTOX is not an appropriate treatment for these kinds of superficial lines and wrinkles. Instead, injectable dermal fillers, laser skin resurfacing, or treatments with platelet-rich plasma provide excellent, often complementary, results. BOTOX® is used along with dermal fillers to achieve the best result.
The safety and efficacy of BOTOX have been well established through randomized clinical trials, scientific research published in peer-reviewed medical journals, and the successful administration of the product during more than 30 million treatment sessions. That said, side effects can occur. The most common include temporary redness, swelling, or itching at the injection site, but these typically subside within minutes to hours. More serious side effects involve migration from the injection site. These are rare and can mostly be avoided by proper administration techniques. During your consultation for BOTOX with Dr. Seib, she will thoroughly explain any risks and potential side effects of the procedure.
To minimize adverse side effects and correctly use botulinum toxins in clinical practice, a practitioner must have a precise understanding of the functional anatomy of the mimetic muscles. Dr. Seib’s years of medical education and specialized training form the basis upon which she builds her practice, enabling her to use this and other medications as tools to achieve excellent aesthetic results.
Dr. Seib’s approach to nonsurgical facial rejuvenation is informed by an inherent appreciation of aesthetic beauty and an understanding of how to best realize it. She believes that an optimal BOTOX treatment strategy requires finesse, precision, and a delicate balance of softening wrinkles and preserving a patient’s own natural facial expression.
